Mensajeros de la Paz has organised a solidarity cooking event in front of the Invernadero del Palacio de Cristal de Arganzuela (Madrid) on the occasion of the World Nutrition Day focused on the importance of food and nutrition for the elderly. Father Ángel, president and founder of Mensajeros de la Paz, has counted on the collaboration of seven important national chefs and associations for the elderly in this event. Pepe Rodríguez (El Bohío, two Repsol suns and one Michelin star), Jordi Cruz (ABaC, 3 Repsol suns and three Michelin stars) and Samantha Vallejo-Nágera (Samantha de España catering), the jury of the culinary talent MasterChef, were at the helm of the cookers alongside Toño Pérez (Atrio, three Repsol suns and three Michelin stars), Marcos Morán (Casa Gerardo, three Repsol suns and one Michelin star), Carlos Maldonado (Raíces, one Repsol sun and one Michelin star) and Pepa Muñoz (El Qüenco de Pepa, one Repsol sun).
They put together a wonderful menu consisting of three starters, a main course and a dessert which was enjoyed by 60 guests, including seniors from Mensajeros de la Paz centres and projects and representatives of senior citizens’ associations. The carefully designed menu included dishes full of flavour and essential nutrients necessary for this stage of life. The service began with a tomato salad with pickled tuna morrillo; cream of crab with giblets; and ‘El cochinito se va a la playa’, a dish made with Iberian jowl, shrimp from Huelva and cocido extremeño stew. The main course was a roast sirloin of beef with roasted vegetables and Spanish sauce. Finally, a brownie with coffee sauce was served. With this lunch, made with the support of the culinary talent MasterChef, the diners enjoyed a unique and healthy gastronomic experience.
This event was held as part of World Nutrition Day, when special attention is paid to the nutrition of our elderly, with a balanced diet adapted to the specific needs of the elderly. Adequate food not only contributes to improving their physical health, but also to their general wellbeing, helping to prevent illnesses and maintain a good quality of life.
Father Ángel, president of Mensajeros de la Paz, thanked the team of chefs for their generosity: “It is beautiful to be able to carry out this type of event thanks to the solidarity of great chefs”. For his part, the general director of the NGO, Sergio Mella said, “on Nutrition Day we want to highlight the importance of diet in the elderly to lead a healthy life” explaining that “in addition, we want to remember that not far from here there are still hundreds of people queuing in San Anton to get a full breakfast and a sandwich to ensure their daily intake”.
Dr. José Ramón Calvo, an expert in nutrition for the elderly, discussed the main dietary problems faced by the elderly, the importance of proper nutrition and some dietary recommendations.
In the meeting with the media, Pepe Rodríguez thanked the invitation on behalf of all the participating chefs for the invitation to this event and highlighted the awareness of healthy eating among our elders. “For all of us it is an honour to participate in this solidarity cooking, organised by Mensajeros de la Paz and Padre Ángel. We wanted to do our bit by doing what we do best: putting love in the kitchen. Our job is not only to prepare delicious dishes, but also to contribute to improve the quality of life of our elderly people. As we have shown, it is possible to enjoy delicious and healthy food suitable for everyone”, said the chef from Toledo.
